Great Camps of the Adirondacks
by: Harvey Kaiser

Explore the Gilded Age of the Adirondacks and the era of the Great Camps.

Discover the Great Camps - the Guilded Age of the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. Harvey Kaiser traces the history of the magnificent Adirondacks ‘camps’ of northern New York State and of the region itself from the first sighting by a European in 1535 to the developments that led to the building of the ‘Great Camps.’ The sixty years from 1870 to 1930 were the heyday of these camps, the ‘Gilded Age’ of the Adirondacks, and Kaiser gives a fascinating account both of the personalities who engineered and financed these fabulous structures and of the buildings themselves

Adirondack rustic lodges, or Great Camps, as their wealthy owners called them, were built as summer vacation homes. Local craftsmen built the lodges of native materials on a scale matching the “cottages” of Newport and the spa of Saratoga. Similar in construction and design, the camps have a self-sufficiency of structure and intentions that mirror perfectly the personalities of the builders. The building complexes in this style were most comfortably set on a lakeshore or river, against a background of forests and mountains. They are characterized by the use of natural materials – indigenous logs and stone – and shingled roofs with broad overhangs and porches with simply proportioned window and door openings.
